RADM Wertheim was a central player in the development of the Polaris, Poseidon, and Trident Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles. While these programs suffered setbacks on occasion, the reliability of these systems is a testament to the discipline and technical rigor that is embodied within the Strategic Systems Program Office. On 23 October 2009, the Navy quietly passed the 129th consecutive successful launch of the Trident Fleet Ballistic Missile.

RADM Wertheim's words of wisdom from 1978 are relevant today and should be considered by every major defense acquisition program manager.
